Murphy's law

So the car's been making crazy noises lately. Apparently a wheel bearing isn't faring so well... or so I'm told. At any rate, it's often quite loud and really sounds like it needs fixing. I had a local mechanic check it out one day, but he couldn't find anything or hear anything. He said since it was raining that day the water could have lubricated the noise away temporarily. And sure enough, the noise isn't as bad on rainy days.

So I waited for a string of sunny days; by now the noise is noticeable almost all the time. I took the car back this week... and the stupid car behaved perfectly and purred all the way to the mechanic shop. AARGGHHH! Since I'd already wasted money on one fruitless inspection, I wasn't about to have them test a well-behaved car this time. I said I'd drop by on a day when the noise was back. Tried again the next day... same well-behaved absence of noise. At least I have a routine now: drive over to the shop, and if the car behaves I keep right on going and mosey on home, chagrined at my good/bad fortune. I guess the moral would be: if it don't sound broke, don't fix it!

Next fist-shaker. For our upcoming travels, we'd bought plane tickets from here to Edmonton and from Vancouver to here but were waiting for a good deal from Edmonton to Vancouver (or Abbotsford). Way back I'd seen flights for $70 but it was the first time I'd checked so I wasn't to know that was a great deal. Ever since, flights have been around $180 for the particular day we've chosen to fly. We recently gave up waiting (since time's running out) and bought flights to Seattle instead. We'd planned to go Stateside from Langley anyway, and it happened to be slightly cheaper at this point to go there first. Until right after we bought tickets of course: the next day Westjet had a sale for $120. Sigh... the moral: you can't win so don't bother trying.
