Trip to BC - part 4

Back in Vernon, things looked a little different: no more snow! It looked a little bit like spring, which was taken advantage of with some outdoor work.

Another sign of spring was the birds. Robins abounded, as did some annoying percher that pecked the side of the house every day. It was too smart for us, try as we might to stalk it with a shiny new pellet gun. Oh well, not my problem now!

We spent the last few days relaxing with the in-laws and trying to make them sick of Lily (easier to part ways then, you see). It probably didn't work.

A very cute hat knitted by mom and lined by grandma.

She's fascinated by the art of drinking like a big people. Caught on quite well herself too.

So right toward the end we wake up one morning to a very white view outside. Suddenly it looked like winter again; good thing the yard work had been done the day before. We decided to take a drive up to Silver Star, the ski resort nearby. Driving around the chalets, it wasn't hard to see where this year's snow all ended up... crazy amounts up there.

Going for an uphill walk somewhere in the resort, after some snowboarders whisked past us we soon realized we were actually walking up a run rather than a trail. Oh well, good time for a picture.

And thus ended our little excursion out west. As you can tell, these posts were more about the pictures than the tales. Deal with it.

Trip to BC - part 3

After nearly two weeks down south, it was time to head to the Bulkley Valley after a five-year absence. Lily had taken this particular month to decide she no longer depended on her soother. This was not a welcome development, but we soon discovered the band-aid solution: biscuits! They're effective only for as long as it takes to eat them, and they make a huge mess, but that's better than nothing!

We left on a Friday, allowing Saturday for travel as well, in case munchkin decided not to cooperate. We took the borrowed car as far as Kamloops (a little ways off the main route), where we picked up a rental. Oddly, rental cars don't come with winter tires unless you specific request them... and pay for them of course. Our full-size car was a super cheap deal (thanks, random discount code on the Internet) so paying the $75 for winters wasn't the end of the world.

As it turned out, Lily did very well indeed and we decided to finish the trip in a day; this is made all the more remarkable by the fact that she got her first tooth that day! (She has two now: the bottom front ones.) The weather did turn brutal toward the end, and our snazzy tires paid off right there. Total time: 14 hours, including detour through Kamloops.

The last time we visited Smithers was in 2008. We stayed with my sister Martine in Telkwa that time, so this time we stayed with Karin in Smithers, as her much-expanded house can now accommodate us easily.

Cousins did plenty of bonding.

Carrie wanted to do some local stuff, so the sisters took her cross-country skiing.

Other than a few visits to see friends, the only other major outing was to fulfill one last wish of Carrie's: go snowmobiling! So some all-important pallets were acquired and we three families headed to the "farm" (thanks Jeremy!) for an afternoon of bonfire and sledding. Oh, and thanks to Hofsinks for use of the numerous trails in their back forty. Quite the network... signs with trail names and everything!

The staples: some mountains (if only for the backdrop), some Suburbans, some trucks, some sleds, some snow, some family. Some fun. Only one Suburban got stuck during the shindig, but that's why you need a second one to pull the first one out.

Lily's first snowmobile ride! I'm sure she'll remember it for a long time.

Cool dudette.

Winter picnic. Somewhere atop one of the trees in the background hangs a model rocket that we fired 1200 feet into the air; too bad it descended only 1150 feet.

"What, not warm enough?" <Tosses on a few more pallets>

The outing was a great way to end our very short stay.

We did pop into Houston one afternoon to say hi to a few friends and visit Carrie's uncle and aunt. Normally we spend a fair bit of time there, but not this time around.

We drove back to Vernon in a day, with a quick rendezvous with another uncle of Carrie's; we caught him at the end of his 15-hour shift hauling logs. Oh, and I got only one speeding ticket! It's been many years since I had one of those. I haven't had many, but one of them was actually acquired about a dozen years ago, while visiting the Bulkley Valley and driving a rental car! Talk about déjà vu...

Trip to BC - part 2

Langley, the old stomping grounds. For Carrie anyway; I lived there only three years. With the in-laws moved out of town, our default lodgings are no longer available. Fortunately, Carrie's brother Daryl bought a house in Langley recently, so we stayed with them for the next week and a bit. It was a great opportunity for uncles and aunts and nephews and nieces to become (re)acquainted. We finally met our latest nephew Micah...

Awww...

"Can't keep both eyes open... too... tired..."

His aunt Carrie made him a nice sweater...

...and Micah's mom made a beautiful painting of Lily!

We made a number of visits to Lily's great-grandparents (you descendents who live nearby don't know how good you have it... visit regularly!). We had some very nice pictures taken, since you never know when such an opportunity will arise again.

The ladies: four generations!

And with the other great-grandmother.

Great-grand-kin spending quality time.

The family was kind enough to organize a meet'n'greet for the extended family, so we could see everyone again and show off Lily & Micah. We took the opportunity to get various other family photos taken. Here's one with the in-laws and their brood of grandkiddies.

A quick two-day trip to Washington to visit some friends...

Hanging out at Costco in Olympia.

...and an enjoyable afternoon with former Ottawans.

We did the rounds, visiting so many people and yet not enough. So little time, as hard as that is to believe. I guess there's always next time...

Trip to BC - part 1

A week ago, we returned from a month-long trip to BC. It's not that the province is so captivating; our family and friends are just too spread out. Nice going, us.

I didn't want to come along for the entire month but got talked into it. I don't regret it, as little munchkin changed significantly during that time. Would have been a shame to miss any of it!

We found a willing young lady to babysit our plants for the month. As part of the deal she got to drive our crappy car, but she also had to drop us off and pick us up at the airport at very lousy times. Oh, and the other part of the deal was to not lock herself out of the house, but I guess she forgot about that part the day after we left :). On the bright side, you can call up any locksmith to break into a home for which you have no proof of residence. Not the most comforting thought...

We flew in and out of Kelowna, as the in-laws have moved from Langley to Vernon. I guess the Okanagan Valley will be our new primary western destination from now on. The art of flying has to be relearned when one starts travelling with kids; no more getting away with little or no checked luggage. Lily decided to take a stroller, a car seat with base, and a big suitcase full of clothing. We may consider doing disposable diapers on future travels; the cloth stuff takes up a ton of space.

Baby's first plane ride!

We spent the remainder of the week with Carrie's parents. The house is under construction; the temporary living space is all in the basement, except the kitchen upstairs which is finished. I'd taken the laptop and took what opportunities I could to get some work done; a project or two around the house was also tackled, but beyond that we took it nice and easy.

Lily spent some time in the same high chair her mom used oh-so-many years ago. I did see old photos of Carrie sitting in it; one day I'll have to get copies of those to compare.

Yummy Mum-Mum.

Not impressed.

"C'est la vie, eh?"

Trying out grandma's new sink.

It's been getting more and more difficult to swaddle our bundle. The little Houdini always finds her way out, one squirming limb at a time.

This is how you sunbathe in February.

There was a bunch of snow when we arrived, but the weather turned very mild for a day or two. Having lugged the stroller all the way to BC (it proved its worth at the airports, but beyond that we might have done without), we picked one day to go for a hike over a hill somewhere in town. This stroller really does go pretty much anywhere, but the downside is that someone still has to propel it there. That someone would be me; I got a pretty good workout that afternoon.

All-terrain vehicle; Lily slept through all the bumps.

On Saturday morning we borrowed a car and made the drive to Langley. Other than some lousy conditions on Highway 97C, the drive was mostly good... even on the Coquihalla.
