Weekend away

This past weekend we went down to visit some of my family. My wee brother and his fiancée are in the area from Alberta, and we had to go and approve her him before they get married in July. Luckily for them, I hereby grant my approval, with almost no reservations. I just know they were on pins and needles waiting for my decision, so now their lives can go on. You're welcome.

We took the dog since we wouldn't know who to farm her out to, and since my dad made the mistake of saying she was welcome. Actually she won everyone over and was hardly any trouble. Hardly. She even graduated from cage lock-up at night; we'll see if she ends up losing that privilege in the near future.

Our niece Megan loved Daisy as well and shared everything from dolls to juice.

There seemed to be slightly more snow in Vineland than in Ottawa, which I didn't think was fair for Ottawa. Daisy, recently acquainted with the white stuff, had a blast, sniffing and snorting and scampering and shivering away.

Daisy on her first hunt. She's probably not a natural; sticking her in a cage with 15 quail will hopefully be enough of an advantage.

We had a great fondue dinner and gift-giving on Saturday night. When we do gifts among the adults, we like to play one of those games that may or may not net you an unwanted item. Carrie was momentarily in possession of a nice Planet Earth DVD set, but that made its way to someone else soon enough. But Carrie wanted it anyway, so we went to Costco on Monday to see if we could buy the same set. (We tried to take Daisy in the store but apparently not everyone welcomes dogs into their establishments... who knew?) Turns out Planet Earth comes as part of an even bigger BBC Natural History Collection, which is 17 discs for $100. So we bought it; now my collection of original DVDs numbers 18, previously unchanged since 1999.

Some of us went to Niagara-on-the-Lake to wander through town there. We took the dog, which turned out to be a hit for everyone else wandering the streets. She was a local celebrity. We try not to let it get to her head; no one likes a diva.

On Tuesday the weather was miserable. It warmed up and rained a lot so most of the snow melted. The temperature in Ottawa looked to be in the negatives so I imagined that somewhere in between it was a very messy and slick zero degrees.

We left for home just before 8pm. It rained right up to the 401/416 interchange, where it suddenly turned into sleet and the highway was slushy and not well plowed. Maintaining 80km/h proved to be challenging. Soon after that, my wiper edges decided to freeze in an unnatural shape and the sleet froze onto the windshield. I pulled over and fixed the issues, but as we took off again I had to drive through a pile of slushy snow, which might have been the reason the car refused to go into overdrive thereafter. Anyway, I fell in behind a brave transport truck that went 100km/h even though most other vehicles wouldn't break 70. So we over-revved our way home in decent time. Total trip: 5h 10m. And my purchase of winter tires has now been deemed justified.

We arrived home to a foot of new snow. Yay winter!

Dear Jane,
Are you sure this drawing of a spider is the one I sent you? This spider only has seven legs and I do not feel I would have made such an elementary mistake when I drew it.

Regards, David.

Dear David,

Hello, I am back and have read through your emails and accept that despite missing a leg, that drawing of a spider may indeed be the one I sent you. I realise with hindsight that it is possible you rejected the drawing of a spider due to this obvious limb ommission but did not point it out in an effort to avoid hurting my feelings. As such, I am sending you a revised drawing with the correct number of legs as full payment for any amount outstanding. I trust this will bring the matter to a conclusion.

Regards, David.

Dear David,
As I have stated, we do not accept drawings in lei of money for accounts outstanding. We accept cheque, bank cheque, money order or cash. Please make a payment this week to avoid incurring any additional fees.

Yours sincerely, Jane Gilles

I understand and will definately make a payment this week if I remember. As you have not accepted my second drawing as payment, please return the drawing to me as soon as possible. It was silly of me to assume I could provide you with something of completely no value whatsoever, waste your time and then attach such a large amount to it.

Regards, David.

It gets better. Said spider drawing has now been sold on eBay for $10,000. Yikes... what recession?!

daisy days

Well, back to the old blog... ugh, what a chore.

Two weeks ago I tried to buy winter tires but I had to get in line. So they were finally installed today. I took the pooch to the garage in the morning to drop off the car and walked her home. That wasn't so bad, since I suspect most sane people aren't out in the streets at 7am... I myself hardly knew such a time existed. Walking back to the garage later, however, was BRUTAL! I was accosted no fewer than six times due to my doxie Daisy. If I have somewhere to walk to, I prefer to just walk and not stop for everyone who thinks that puppy "is sooo cute!" Yikes. And it wasn't just limited to pedestrians; one couple hung out of their car at a traffic light for a better view. Despite their comments, I ignored them and dragged my rodent-faced companion along that much faster.

Enough complaining. Since not much happens around here, allow me to bombard you with canine candids.

The backpack dachshund's cute factor is very high as well... one cannot traipse through the market unnoticed with this thing.

Daisy sits here twice a day: once when she watches Carrie leave for work and once when she hears her come home. Upon the return, the tail doesn't wag until Carrie is in sight, at which time it goes into overdrive.

She's pretty good at stairs by now, but at first they were a little daunting. Probably because she was so tiny she couldn't have paws on two steps at once; on the way down she'd literally being doing a handstand on each step, little butt straight up in the air.

"do i have to?"

"upstairs is less scary, but... HAAALP!"

She'll lie any which way...

...seriously.

But she has her favourite spots.

Hangin' out.

Pet bat, anyone?

The former owner gave her a nice doggy bone. Our little killer made quick work of it.

Here's Daisy and her initial favourite things. A bed (actually meant for cats), some string (also not just for cats... hours of entertainment (for her and anyone watching)), a rawhide stick, the doggy bone, and the softest blankie ever.

Oh yeah, and she likes using her bed as a fort, but who of us didn't do that as a youngster? Or perhaps more recently... forts are awesome! Here's something else that's awesome: packing paper. She was insanely scared of it at first, I think because of the annoying crinkly sound. But she eventually loved it and we've been cleaning up bite-size pieces ever since. (Note to self: return electronic shredder to store.)

Tongue sticking it out while sleeping.

Alright, get back to your important stuff; I'm done.

Nothing much

Hmm what's new? Since I couldn't possibly blog every day like my sister Marian does, here's a detail-laden review of the last couple of weeks.

- one fine Sunday, had a bunch of people over for dinner, games and banana flambé;

the bananas refusing to be flambéd:

yum!

- later that week we spent an evening playing pool, as a welcome back evening for one of our government types who used to be a city slicker but went to campaign in Saskatchewan for a while and returned a bonafide redneck... cowboy boots and all! true story.

a non-redneck pool shark:

chillin'

- we'd received a gift certificate to the Keg, so we went for Friday evening dinner to the Keg Manor, which is a Keg restaurant operated out of a nice 19th-century house in Ottawa. I wonder if I'll ever not order the chicken and ribs when dining at the Keg... yum! *drools a little on keyboard* 90uohuqna3;o4eij (What? I had to wipe it off.)

- I went to help at the manse for an evening last week to prepare for the flooring to be installed the next day. I hadn't been there in a while so I got my just desserts... didn't get home until 1 a.m. Anyway, everyone's efforts have finally paid off, in that the minister and his wife are able to properly host their first visitors this weekend.

- so we had a pretty lousy snowfall this past week; it should be a crime to incorrectly forecast delicious amounts of snow, what with all the emotional trauma it causes. Not that 6 inches is too delicious but it would have been a good start to everyone's favourite season. If I'd gathered all the snow in my yard I would have been hard pressed to make a pile 6 inches high (of course, the yard is totally hugh). I'm told other areas got more than we did downtown, but that's not something I want to hear. Anyway, I'd had the foresight to cover the barbeque before the snowfall, but I quite forgot about the lounging chair on the deck that we probably won't need for a while.

- friends of ours recently discovered they'll be moving down to Obamaland soon, so their place is up for sale. Yesterday Carrie and I went to help out with odds and ends. The girls went shopping and did who knows what else, while the guys brought scrap metal to the depot for a handsome sum of money (as an example, an old car is worth about $40... cash money!!) It was time well wasted and the money for the scrap metal even covered the fuel used to bring it there. What more can one ask for?

- the other night (Reformation Day) the first trick-or-treaters came by just after 5:30pm. Crazy or what? I realize that with the new time change schedule it's not dark as early, but at least wait till after supper. Oh well, we needed to indulge only three halloweeners and now the rest of the candy is mine. Woohoo!
